Hydrated Lime and Unslaked Lime
Lime produced in our kilns at Idwala Lime in Danielskuil take the form of lumps or pebbles. At our plant in Vereeniging burnt lime is milled, or hydrated to make slaked lime.

The lumps and smaller granules, grit and powder forms of the product are used in neutralising acid solutions, water purification and softening, the manufacture of ceramics, and soil stabilisation. Effluent treatment and flue gas desulphurisation are other uses which ultimately have a positive effect on the environment. Lime Distributors (Pty) Ltd is fully owned by Idwala Industrial Holdings.

Limestone and Unslaked Lime
Idwala Lime, located in the Northern Cape, holds high-grade Calcitic Limestone mined in open cast mines. The Limestone is crushed, screened and then calcined (burnt) in rotary or shaft kilns at temperatures of between 900-1200 degrees centigrade. During which the carbonate is converted into oxide (CaO or CaMgO2) and CO2 is released.

Burning is the key process in the production of lime converting stone into a product that is widely used in our modern world. At every stage of the production process the material is subject to rigorous quality control with the final product being tested with state-of-the-art analytical technologies.

02 06
Agricultural Lime
Agricultural lime is used for soil neutralisation and soil enrichment as most plants and crops grow best under neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Liming to adjust the pH of acidic soils to the range 6 to 7 assist in producing fertile crops and supply elements to the soil such as calcium and magnesium.

With farming being more scientific, Idwala has developed ultrafine granulated limestone prills with advantages to farmers that outweigh the traditional liming method. Our Kulu Agsup and Kulu Agrit C products are used as a source of calcium in animal feed and poultry grit to promote healthy animal growth.

Calcium Carbonates
Idwala Carbonates mines a deposit of unique super white calcitic and dolomitic limestone which provides the raw material for our range of fine carbonate products. Situated near Port Shepstone on the Kwa Zulu Natal south coast, Idwala extracts some of the whitest carbonates in the world.

The production process begins with the quarrying of the raw limestone, which is then taken through two stages of crushing, scrubbing and washing reducing the limestone to granules. The operation is an efficient, technically advanced producer of our beneficiated range of carbonates (known as Kulubrite) for use in the manufacture of paper, paint, plastics, ceramics and chemicals

Pyrophyllite
Operating out of Benoni, Idwala Industrial Minerals mills and micronises Pyrophyllite which is mined at Witpoort in Ottosdal, approximately 250 kilometres from Johannesburg in the North West Province. Pyrophyllite is used in the paper industry as a pitch controlling agent and as a filler in the paint industry.

05 06
Magnetite
Our processing plant in Phalaborwa upgrades magnetite produced as a by-product of the phosphate mining process at Foskor. This is done by magnetic separation and fine milling.

Magnetite is supplied to the coal industry as a heavy separation medium (for coal washing).
